Altar Server

“Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve…”

Matthew 20:28

Return to top of page.

Description:

The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy during Mass. This involves presenting or arranging vessels and other items used in the celebrations. Their reverent and efficient service enables other ministers to attend to their own roles while the liturgical actions unfold, with calm, order and appropriate decorum. As members of the assembly who are often visible to all, the altar servers also model good liturgical participation by actively joining in the hymns, prayers and responses of the liturgy, by 'looking alert' and by sitting, standing, or kneeling at the appropriate times.

Art & Environment

“For everything there is a season…”
Ecclesiastes 3:1

Description:
This team works behind the scenes to transform our Worship environment to heighten the awareness of the festive, solemn, or penitential nature of the different liturgical seasons.  Their quiet presence is often unnoticed, yet the results of their labors are visible to all the parish community.  A variety of helpers are needed to prepare a prayerful atmosphere in the worship space throughout the liturgical year. This includes:
Seasonal Decorating Crews - People are needed to arrange flowers and plants, to iron and hang banners, and to place other items appropriate for the liturgical season or special liturgy in the church, the social hall, and the entrances of the church prior to major feasts and seasons such as Christmas and Easter.  Seasonal decorating assistance is also necessary at the end of the major seasons to remove the décor and properly store it for the next year.
No experience is necessary.  Helpers must enjoy working with others, be willing to accept direction, and be able to assist with moving, lifting, and preparing items to be placed in the environment.  Watch the bulletin for announcements about dates and times for decorating.  Families are encouraged to volunteer together during the various seasons.
Linens Crew - People are needed every week to launder and iron the purificators and towels used at Mass.  Linens are typically taken home on Monday or Tuesday, laundered, ironed, folded and returned by Friday.  Each person is scheduled approximately once every 8 weeks.
Polishing Crew - People are needed to polish the chalices and patens on a monthly basis.  This task is done in the sacristy and takes about one hour per month.  No experience is necessary.  Polishing materials and instruction are provided.
We also welcome artists of various medias to help envision new ideas and work on our various projects throughout the year.

A minimum of ten volunteers are needed each weekend.  Volunteers are scheduled on a rotating basis according to their availability and serve about 1 hour every 4-6 weeks after the Mass of their choice.  It is a great opportunity for families to serve together.

Lector
"The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, That I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them".  Isaiah 50:4

Description:
Lectors strive to make the Liturgy of the Word as meaningful as possible for the worshipping assembly by speaking God’s Word as storyteller, telling how God has acted and is acting in our lives. Lectors strive to proclaim God’s Word in a clear and compelling manner so that the worshipping assembly will be inspired to ponder and meditate on God’s words in their daily lives. Lectors also raise the prayers of the faithful to God on behalf of the assembly.  Three lectors are needed at every weekend and holy day Mass.  The first lector proclaims the Old Testament reading; the second lector proclaims the New Testament reading; and the third lector acts as intercessor by raising the prayers of the faithful (petitions) to God.  Lectors are also needed for every weekday Mass.
Requirements:
Must be in at least 11th grade or older and have received the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Must have a clear, steady voice and be comfortable reading in public.
Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.

Training:
Guidelines for the ministry and practical training are provided.  Lectors receive a workbook with the readings for the current liturgical year as a resource in their preparation.  Training is provided so that lectors will learn to proclaim the Word transparently so that the Word itself, not the lector, is placed in the foreground.

Music Ministry
"Sing joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; break forth into song; sing praise".
Psalm 98:4

Return to top of page.
Description:
The members of the assembly are the primary music-makers in the liturgy, for it is their song of praise and petition.  The goal of the ministry of music is to bring the song of the assembled community to life, and to transform the efforts of everyone present into prayerful song and celebration during each Mass.  Our Music Ministry provides vocal and instrumental music for all weekend Masses, funerals, weddings, and special liturgies.  There are a variety of opportunities available for people wanting to share their musical gifts with the parish, including the following:
Cantors proclaim the Word of God in the Psalms and lead the assembly in sung prayer.  Those wishing to serve in this role must have a pleasant voice, a good sense of pitch and rhythm, and a prayerful, joyful spirit.  Music is distributed in advance so that cantors may prepare at home.  Cantor rehearsals are typically held on Thursdays from 5:30 – 6:30 PM in the church.  Practical training is provided and new cantors will lead music at Mass with another cantor as part of the training before cantoring a full Mass alone.  Singers who are not comfortable singing alone can be paired up with another cantor to lead the singing at Mass.

Accompanists support the cantor or choir musically by playing the piano, organ or guitar.  Those wishing to serve in this role must be able to read music and to count while playing, have a good sense of rhythm and tempo, and be able to follow the cantor or choir director’s lead.  Music is distributed in advance so the accompanists may prepare at home.  Practical training is provided and new accompanists will work with another accompanist at Mass as part of the training before accompanying a full Mass alone.

Celebration Singers is a choir of adults and high school students that sings traditional and contemporary choral music in four-part harmony twice per month at the 11:00 a.m. Mass and at special liturgies from September through May. Rehearsals are on Thursday nights from 7:00 – 8:30 in the church.

Folk Group is a group of singers, guitarists and other instrumentalists that provides folk-style music for the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass two times per month.  This group rehearses most Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. at the home of Al and Peggy Nohner.

Life Teen Band consists of vocalists and instrumentalists who sing contemporary praise and worship songs and the music of rising contemporary Catholic artists at the Life Teen Mass at 5:00 p.m. on selected Sundays from September through May. This group rehearses based on the group’s schedule and on scheduled Sundays.

Children’s Choir is made up of youth of our parish and typically sings at one Mass per month during the school year. The children’s choir is currently on hiatus while it undergoes restructuring.  Please let us know if you are interested in directing or helping with a children’s choir.  We are looking for help to get this choir re-started.

Funeral Choir is a choir we hope to develop for St. Philip’s Church to sing at funerals during the week.  Please let us know if you are available during the day and are interested in singing in a funeral choir.

Instrumentalists include people who play a brass, percussion, string, or woodwind instrument and are willing to share their talents at Mass.
